[IRCA] MW DX from Enid OK, January 10-14, 2011

All times and dates strictly UT. MW log editors are welcome to excerpt items, reformat and change to favorite timezone if necessary. Rx: mostly DX-398 with internal antenna only; some caradio as specified; above 2 MHz on FRG-7 with 110-foot east-west longwire.

** AUSTRALIA. The VL8s on 120m seldom surpass the hi local noise level here, but were detectable with some audio Jan 14 at 1356, better on 2485 than 2325 or 2310 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. 1120, KEOR, Catoosa-Sperry-Tulsa, which had been more or less funxional recently, had reverted to open carrier, when checked Jan 11 around 1930 and 2130 UT (Glenn Hauser, Enid, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. 1120, KEOR, Catoosa-Sperry-Tulsa, which was open carrier afternoon of Jan 11, has resumed soul music Jan 13 at 1605 UT check (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 720, WGN Chicago ID at 1930 UT Jan 11, on caradio at a quiet hotspot in western Enid, skywave already in less than an hour after low noon (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1520, KOKC, OKC with farightwingnut Michael Savage, UT Jan 14 at 0312 has severe QRM making SAH of circa 10 Hz from a stupidballgame, 4th quarter of basketball, ergo NBA instead of NCAA (I am not supposed to know this; a friend explained it) including ``charge`` brass music punxuations; tuning down to 1500, I hear the same game on KSTP, which is fulltime ESPN now.

So what`s ESPN on 1520? Per the NRC-AM log, the only nighttimer is KOLM Rochester MN, ``The Ticket`` (how original), 10 kW day and critical hours, 800 watts night. It`s also with CNN and the Minnesota News Network. Night pattern is supposed to aim NNE, rather than non-direxional day, but from this reception I would say they were really running 10 kW ND, if really KOLM. The only other ESPN listed on 1520 is a 1300-watt daytimer, KMSR in Mayville ND. The station-finder at http://www.espnradio.com makes you search thru each state individually; no thanx, except MN and ND to confirm these three. Of course, a particular SBG could be on non-fulltime affiliates, and I heard no ESPN ID really (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1600, Jan 10 at 1418 UT, weather with lows in the teens, highs in the forties, then Red River ski area ad, ``Real Oldies 1600``. Therefore, Albuquerque`s KRKE. Fortunately, K may substitute for QU, otherwise it would have to be QUERQUE, a forbidden call in more ways than one.

1550, Jan 10 at 1421, Albuquerque Traffic Network, mentioning familiar streets such as Candelaria (never pronounced as in Spanish, but ``– air – ee – uh``. Otherwise, there is also a Candelaria Street in El Paso del Norte --- do they at least pronounce it as in Spanish?). Then 1550 also has a Red River ski area commercial; some Elvis, who is a real oldie too, but apparently only as intro to chat about him. This is KIVA, with talk format, strangely enough at the same address as KRKE on San Pedro NE.

Thanks to frequential/propagational advantage, these two 10 kW were putting in much better signals than 50 kW non-direxional 770 KKOB, which I had checked at 1415 after quitting night pattern. KKOB did build up a bit later at 1424 with ID, 1434 ``KKOB First News`` starting with Tucson (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ###
