Tom there's a raft of tiny digital recorders available. The Sony 820 you
mention does have a USB connector...that's critical nowadays, so you can
lift files directly to the computer.
Olympus also has a very good machine...the VN-8100PC (again, PC means it has
a USB port).
Three things to watch for:
1) Don't pay for fancy built-in mikes or stereo recording. While it's
tempting to think of being able to record two channels at once, usually that
stereo is "joint stereo" and there's bleed-through between channels.
2) Be sure the recorder has a line-in jack for your radio.
3) Make sure the low-end response is good. Many such units are
"voice-grade". You should be allowed to test, through a real speaker. The
Olympus DOES have good low-end.
.mp3 files are fine for DX recording. Stay away from .wma files if you can.

Subject: [IRCA] Off topic - Digital Audio Recorders
I am planning on purchasing a digital audio recorder and desire
input from people who use them. What brand/model, what
features are desirable, file type (wav, MP3 etc), ease of operation,
battery life, etc. My local Walmare has two Sony models; ICD
BX800 and ICD PX820
I already have Total Recorder on my
PC but desire a simpler device to capture audio.
Your
comments are welcome.
