Gary, Guy and I found the two-page per subject format of our
serialized article on modifying the E100 quite restrictive. We were
able to give enough information in those articles for the experienced
tinkerer to do the modification, but there was not nearly enough room
to provide the step-by-step instructions or the thorough photographic
coverage that most of us need to do an unfamiliar project.
Gary and I were particularly frustrated with the article on doing the
"Slider E100" mod. Adding the 7.5" ferrite bar and the innovative
"Slider" coil turns an already wonderful Ultralight into what the
authors consider, pound-for-pound, the best MW DX radio on the planet
for domestic DXing.... all for the low price of about $30. What is
doubly frustrating is the Slider mod is about the easiest, simplest
radio modification that either of us has ever seen. It takes a bit
of time to gather the parts, wind the coil and build some sort of
support for the new bigger ferrite bar, but all of that is really
simple to accomplish. Attaching the slider coil to the E100 is the
only "difficult" part and that requires dealing with two screws and
two solder joints.
So, in hopes that a number of other semi-crazy Ultralighters will
join us in driving Slider E100s, we have uploaded a seven-page
article to the Ultralight Files area of dxer.ca. It is titled "YOU
CAN DO THIS: More About Constructing the Slider E100 Loopstick"
Download at your own risk :>)
While you are there, if you are one of the few that has not yet
downloaded Kevin Schanilec's wonderful article on small passive
loops, you might want to get it, too. It is a true classic for our hobby!
