[IRCA] Grayland TP's for 8-29...Ultralights Save the Day
Hello Guys,
Although John pronounced the morning the poorest of the week, it sure
didn't seem too bad at Grayland!
The Japanese powerhouses were not up to their usual Grayland levels, but the
Koreans, VOA-1575 and some Chinese were about as strong as I've ever heard
them. In fact, the new Ultralight DXing sensation, a stock Sangean DT-400W,
made a crystal-clear mp3 of a booming VOA-1575 ID at 1258, as well as a
booming HLAZ-1566 at 1246.
Room 14 of the Grayland Motel proved less than ideal, with a wild party
going on next door in Room 12 until 2:00AM (there is no Room 13 at the
Grayland Motel, no doubt at the insistence of DXers not wishing for bad luck).
There was also a steady drizzle at the ocean coast, which made it impossible to
take the stand-alone portables to "my" picnic table on the Grayland Beach
Road. But there was still a lot of fun.
Arriving in Grayland just around sunset, I immediately noticed a strong
heterodyne on 1215 from Virgin Radio on the 30" loopstick ICF-2010, around
0330 UTC. The signal was coming from the right direction, but never came to
audio. I couldn't help thinking that if the loopstick was a couple of feet
longer, audio would have been there :>)
Around 1130, there were the usual weak DU carriers on the modified
2010, but JOUB-774 was the first to produce audio, around 1110 HLCA-972 followed
shortly after. Then multiple Koreans, Japanese and Chinese showed up, along
with VOA-1575, for a very interesting morning. At around 1315, a presumed
RTM-1475 in E. Malaysia showed up weakly on the 30" ICF-2010, but wasn't
audible on the Ultralights.
Finally, 2NR-738 showed up with weak audio around 1335 on the modified 2010
and E100, for the only DU audio of the morning. None of the "second tier"
Japanese showed up, even on the modified 2010.
The new stock Sangean DT-400W was a real winner, logging 6 TP's in
rather modest conditions (JOUB-774, JOIB-747, JOAK-594, HLCA-972, HLAZ-1566 and
VOA-1575). Its high-band performance was clearly superior to that of the Sony
SRF-T615, which also logged the same six stock TP's this morning. The
modified E100 (7.5" Amidon slider loopstick and Murata CFJ455K5 narrow filter)
logged new stand-alone Ultralight catches of CRI-1593 and a presumed Taiwan-738,
as well as a relog of North Korea-657 (heard in March on an SRF-39FP).
The tiny little analog SRF-S84 managed to hear JOUB-774, no doubt the
smallest official Ultralight ever to hear a TP. The entire morning was a real
blast-- everybody should have this much fun. Can't wait to try this again
ASAP!
73, Gary
