David,
I use Amidon ferrite beads to make my transformer. I also use military
commo wire to feed my rx antenna's. Here is how Gary Breed, the K9AY
loop inventor describes making the transformer:
"My K9AY Loop and 9:1 Beverage transformers are "binocular" using two large
77 material beads (Amidon FB77-6301) with separate windings of #22 AWG
wire -- 3 turns for the 50 ohm side and 9 turns for the 450 ohm side. The
measured loss is around 0.2 dB from below 160M to at least 20M. This
material and winding scheme works well at lower frequencies, too, since many
loop users are Broadcast and low frequency DXers." I epoxy the beads
side-by-side.
www.amidoncorp.com $.42 @. They used to sell them by the dozen for $5.
You can connect your rx to the antenna using either coax or zip cord as Nick
suggests. I just happened to have some military commo wire. I used to use
coax, but found the mil. commo wire less obtrusive and works fb. For the
xfrmr, I used #24 wire--it's all I had on hand at the time.
