If the radio is sensitive and overload resistant, then it may be worth
looking further. If it has a standard IF frequency for which better filters
are available, then swapping the wide stockers for some better ones may make
a star out of it.
The original Delco radio in my 1988 Blazer was quite sensitive and
definitely intermod resistant. On FM I changed the factory wide filters for
a set of 150KHz Muratas and it made a *huge* difference. I have literally
hundreds of Murata 110KHz filters left if anyone is interested.
Unfortunately I could not find any filters for the AM side of it. And, it
only tuned up to 1620.
FWIW as part of the ultralight discussion..
The Sony ICF-SW100S is another pocket-sized rig. Has a sync detector,
150KHz-30MHz coverage, LSB/USB as well. But it's not all that sensitive.
It really needs help to hear distant and weak stations. Put inside a
passive tuned loop or next to a tower guy wire and it comes to life. By
itself it's fairly deaf. It's also too expensive to fit the Ultralight
definition.
