[IRCA] "Super Prison Radio" Outperforms ICF-2010 in JOIB-747 Reception

Hello All,

The experimental SRF-39FP Ultralite radio (with a transplanted 6.25"
loopstick, fully described on dxer.ca) has received its second TP this month,
again with signal quality superior to that of a fully-aligned ICF-2010.

Tuning the band and finding many strong TP hets around 1455, KXL-750
was tuned in and nulled, producing a decent signal from JOIB-747 after further
slight tuning. The ICF-2010 was checked, and in a repeat of the JOAK-594
reception on 2-12, the ICF-2010 had the Japanese station's audio also, but at a
clearly inferior level.

A full daytime shootout between these two top portables was held on
Sunday (results available upon request to anyone interested), which showed that
the "SPR" had a clear edge in sensitivity up to around 800 kHz, the ICF-2010
had a slight edge from 1000 to 1600, and the SPR again had better sensitivity
from 1650 to 1700 kHz. Of course, the SPR can only compete with the 2010 in
sensitivity-- it cannot compare with the ICF-2010 in selectivity, SSB, synch
detection, memories, etc.

The only instance of total dominance in the sensitivity department was
the SPR's superiority in the 530-700 kHz range, where it actually received a
couple of very weak stations that the 2010 had no trace of. In this lower
frequency range, the Super Prison Radio was just about putting the ICF-2010 "in
jail," hi..

           73, Gary DeBock
