[IRCA] Final DX Sprint Participant’s Package: Updated Definitions of Ultralight

After considerable time, effort and discussion by various individuals, the
Definition of an Ultralight radio for purposes of the Sprint and Firsts and
Records has been prepared and posted in the UL section of www.dxer.ca Also
posted is a complete "package" of rules including definitions and expanded
FAQS for participants.

Please note that any participants who intend to use a radio other than those
listed in the Rules should consult the co-chairs as soon as possible. No
submissions for approval will be considered if submitted after February 22,
2008.

What is an Ultralight Radio? A summary of the definition follows:

1) A simple shirt pocket sized radio of not more than 20 cubic inches.

 2) restrictive band coverage, no selectable filters, no a.m. synchronous
detection, no SSB clarification.

3) No novelty radios such as Coca Cola Can radios, Mr. Potato Head, etc.

4) No one-of-a-kind or rare radios. The radio must be readily available in
new or used markets.
5) Cost not more than $100 retail.
6) No combination radios such as player/recorder + radio, Swiss Army Knife +
radio, etc.

Each radio must be approved by a committee on a case-by-case basis.
Occasional
exceptions may be made to any of the criteria stated in the complete
definition found at www.dxer.ca. The definition is more of a guide than a
set of rigid restrictions; however, the committee requests that discretion be
exercised before seeking approval for radios clearly outside of the
definition. The approval process is thoroughly vetted by many individuals
before a decision is made. The individuals are scattered all over North
America and the vetting process can be time consuming with unanticipated
delays because of work schedules or other commitments, such as travel. Contact
information is contained in the Rules.

While not mandatory for particpation, if you intend to participate, please
contact us at ultralightradio@xxxxxxxxx

Gil Stacy, co-chair, with John Bryant, co-chair
