Re: [IRCA] Might mites Ultra Light SRF-59 DXing

Walt and Joe,

Sony not only has the bizarre habit of discontinuing highly successful
models, but recent "Ultralight" testing has also provided two documented
cases of Sony tinkering with highly successful AM circuitry by stripping it down,
then continuing to sell the same model number without any warning.

The Sony SRF-M85V Walkman model, thoroughly discussed yesterday on the
list, was a classic case of surreptitious sabotage that turned a great AM
radio into a rather mediocre FM-stereo toy.

The Sony ICF-S10Mk2 AM-FM mono model, highly regarded in years past,
has become a stripped-down turkey, incapable of any fringe reception. In the
recent "shootout," it was spared only for humanitarian reasons.

For those of your considering a purchase of an SRF-59 or SRF-M37V, my
advice would be to act quickly. For Sony's top-of the-line Made in Japan
SRF-T615 pocket radio, however, it's unlikely that Sony would tinker with its
"flagship" model by stripping it down, in my opinion.

               73, Gary
