[IRCA] Sony SRF-59

Tried the local Fred Meyer store for the Sony SRF-59. They carry the radio, but were sold out. Walgreens did not have the SRF-59. Noticed that they had a Coby CX53AM-FM digital radio for $5.00. Figured the digital was for the clock setting. Noticed finger wheel tuning for the receiver and volume control on the side of the radio. Has a red tuning light a 2 inch speaker and comes with ear buds. Does not come with instructions. A sheet of paper gives Coby repair center address in NJ.

Bought this COBY CX53 and installed two AAA batteries. Was surprised to find that the digital readout was for AM-FM frequency. The readout on AM is 534-1776 kHz. The coverage posted on the radio is listed as 530-1700 kHz. It has 1 hz tuning, but takes about a minute to tune the proper frequecny. It CX53 has very poor selectivity, about equal to a crystal set. KPAM 860 my strongest local can be heard from 810-900 kHz. Second strongest local KKAD 1550 is heard on 1540 along with Spanish station KGDD-1520 and up to 1710. KKAD covers local KDNZ 1640. The other night I was able to hear KGO 810 and local KDPQ 800. Shows how strong KGO's signal is up here. For much better selectivity I place the radio on my Space Magnet and that really helps a lot. Was able to pull KOHI 1600 in through KKAD signal.

CX53 works very well on FM. It has a 12" whip antenna and pulls in many local FM stations. Putting up Christmas lights today and will be listening to the Coby.

Will try another Fred Meyer today for the Sony SRF 59. Have a nice weekend.

Vancouver, WA
