The Optima and Radio Shack batteries are sealed.  Unless something catastrophic happens, they don't vent gases or leak.  I usually keep mine in an old plastic cooler with the top off.  In the unlikely event of a leak, it would be contained.  And, you could always leave it outside in a weatherproof container with the wires running in.
