"Perhaps some of the tech gurus here can dig a little deeper
into the question of how a few hundred watts, or 1 kW, at
1820 can do so well, compared to MW signals at 1500-ish
that need much higher power."
Bob,
I'm no tech guru, but with top power in the 160 meter band being limited to
1500 W PEP, there's a lot less clutter on top band. In the 1500kc range,
there's a gaggle of 5kW to 50kW stations lurking in the background 24 hours
a day on the east coast. Furthermore, top band is primarily a CW band for
DX which presents a very narrow bandwidth of transmitting and receiving
frequency compared with a.m. Typical signal width for effective CW filters
and transmissions is 500 Hz.
