It does happen, and it happens everywhere in the world.  If you love where you live so much that you are willing to risk dying to live there, all bets are off.  As far as "common"....don't forget that the media jumps on a story and runs it into the ground, partcularly if it revolves around Southern California or New York.  Its even worse when there's nothing else going on that's noteworthy.
   
  Example of media triviality - The Bay Bridge was going to be closed between San Francisco and Oakland over the Labor Day weekend for three days while major constrruction was going on.  Three MONTHS beforehand, they started jabbering about it.  CalTrans spent God knows how much money putting up portable-generator powered signs on all major freeways.  By the time it finally happened, any parrot on a perch with a 10-word vocabulary knew what was going on.  On the Saturday of the closure, the news stations were spending a good 30% of their air time (not just their traffic reports) talking about the "developing" story and went so far as to have most of their reporters in the field covering it.
   
  If Brad Pitt would have gotten a hangnail during this episode, I don't know how they would have been able to control themselves.  You can't trust the media to accurately report very much of anything.
