I wont be attending the IRCA Convention.? The History of Idaho Broadcasting Foundation has a last minute open house we are going to do next week and I need to stay in town and work on some displays.? Fortunately this will be added as? one of the tours? for the NRC/WTFDA Convetion next week.

I liked the analog Delco in my old 1982 Buick Electra.
I logged several new Mexican stations on that radio.
The selectivity wasn't the greatest, but it was
reasonably sensitive. The radio in my 2000 4-Runner is
pretty decent also.

Charles,
As Craig said that a couple small holes in the bottom would have no
effect on the shield of the box. But here the humidity is high and the
box would probably fill will water in time. Right now I have them
sealed, but when I get back from the convention, I will drill a hole or
two in the bottom. Moisture getting in doesn't bother me, unless it
can't run out.

OK, 1/10th of a wavelength. If I drilled a one inch hole in the box, it
would not make any difference. However, I do like the plug idea, as if
there is a hole it will be a nice home for bugs.

Our two cars are a 97 Mercury Tracer and 94 Ford Thunderbird.
They both have AM stereo which is nice and the radios are sensitive. Was at the
6,000' elevation at Mt Hoot today, tried for KGO, but the radio was not that
sensitive. The T-Bird has 266,000 miles on it, when it retires I plan on
keeping the radio.

I had a bit of time this afternoon, so I thought, why not check out the
coax for the vertical, to see what that is. Well, it is the best out of
the bunch. I found double shield and a good foil wrap glued inside. It
looks like at least 3 or 4 covers of shielding. So I put a F fitting on
it along with a termination and check for leakage. Still not perfect,
but better. The locals were S5-S7, not S9, so I connected that piece to
the beverage and I do notice stations like KNBR-680 a bit weaker off the
Eastern beverage than before. Not a biggie, maybe 5 DB or so, but an
improvement. So replace the coax on at least two of the antennas and
things should be better for directivity. I don't have the vertical
connected to coax at the moment as I dont have a new box for it, but I
rarely use the vertical anyway. Back to packing.

Transfered 2 ground termination pots from plastic to metal today. I used 2
plastic zips ties to strap them to the ground rods.
I set each pot to 960 ohms and then connected them to the antenna and ground.
Is this the correct method? Or should I connected them and then trimmed the pot
to 960 ohms? Thanks for the help in advance.

Weak WSDOT highway advisory station (on skywave) repeating warning of
construction work between Yakima and Union Gap on state highway (24?); has
female-voiced message with male-voiced ID's... FCC database only shows WPKV 296
for
City of Toppenish (no WSDOT stations listed near Yakima)... has any other
local DXer heard this HAR?
Also, occasionally a different TIS station on 1610 is occasionally heard on
skywave, giving male-voiced weather reports... could this be the Coast Guard
station on 1610 in Aberdeen (also not listed by FCC), which I recall was
heard during a recent trip to Ocean Shores? Would appreciate any help...

Dennis,
I use an old signal generator as a transmitter, so I monitor when I am
adjusting the pots with a portable radio next to me. Having the pot in
a plastic box would not make any difference as one end is connected to
the antenna and the other side of the pot through a short wire to the
rod. But I would think once you connect the pot into the circuit the
load would change the resistance. You would be better to adjust it after
you connect the pot.

Drove through Gresham today and listened to WQCA 312 on 1610. They run a loop
of about 12 minutes. Even a minute of NOAH weather. With your new coax on the
beverage you should be hearing them soon. Heck, you probably here TIS/HARS from
the East Coast.

Your Yakima TIS is the same one I have been hearing, I believe.
According to the WSDOT CE there, they have several on both 530 & 1610.
There is also a HAR/TIS giving the weather forecast for Pendleton OR on
1610 I get most nights.
By the way, thanks for the copy of the great review on the S5W.
