That was a screwup by their engineer.  WKFD had a short tower, maybe 100' on
a bit of a spot right in a small inlet.  When the tower fell, rather than
quickly getting the ten sections of Rohn 25 tower to put it right back up,
he rigged up some sort of long wire.  That ended up falling across a high
voltage power line and killing power to the area.  Talk about drawing
attention to yourself!  In turn, the delay gave the NIMBYs time to organize
and block reconstruction.  They went dark.  In time, other stations such as
WNRI-1380 got power increases that further hemmed them in.  They did come
back on briefly in a different location, but again went dark.  There is a
plan to resurrect the station, I think.
