Re: [IRCA] Bought an iRiver IFP-795T
Hi Chuck,
At least in the earliest firmware, the files created by the IFP-xxx devices
are actually MP3 files, but with a changed file extension. You don't have
to "convert" the files at all; simply rename them to .MP3 and they will
play fine. I guess this is how they got around any fees or licensing issues.
It's true, though, about the units not appearing as normal drives within
Windows. However, I find the "iRiver Manager" software so easy to use that
I've never upgraded the firmware on my IFP-795 (it would have lost a few
encoding options in the process, anyway).

I'd check this out at Iriver. Their initial versions of the I-7xx and I-8xx
didn't appear as normal flash drives to Windows and didn't directly use mp3
& wma files - they had a proprietary format. That has all been changed in
the newer versions of their firmware which are downloadable from iRiver.
