Estimado Bob -
Thank you. Thank you most kindly. I was remiss in not defining 'gavone',
as marked w/*.
Bob Grant frequently described pig-ignorant boors whose utter dearth of facts
is inversely proportional to the fervor with which they assert their point,
as 'gavones'.
'Gavone' is Neapolitan, or 'Nabblytahn' slang for southern Italian dialect,
'Caifon', meaning hillbilly, an ignorant person who makes a lot of money and
spends it foolishly.
Our Brit friends here on billionaire's row prefer 'Gaffon'. Doesn't it sound
more fit for use when amongst polite company? Does it create a picture in
your mind's eye of a babboon, money bag in one paw, wildly thrashing a
marlinspike with the other as it wends its way through a glass house?
Some theorize another variant, 'Guvvoon' is courtesy of the Sicilians, whose
dialect evinces Moorish influence. Speculation, learned and otherwise aside,
draws a nice picture, yes?
In short, one can correctly use all variants of Caifon to describe those
who know the cost of everything - and the value of nothing.
