Short Term Radio Memories
The Kiwi Radio Dial in the 70's & 80's
______________________________________
For Kiwis who listened to their AM radios way back in the 1970's,
here's a real
test of the long term memory.....remember Radio Sam? How about, dare
we say
it, 'Radio Bosom' [soooo respectable now as b95fm] or even Radio
Yesterday?
The Radio Heritage Foundation features a memory jerker at its website
www.radioheritage.net, so check it out today.
Some 30 years ago, New Zealand airwaves bounced with summer sounds
from short
term radio stations like Radio Waikato's 'Radio Sam' on the
Coromandel, or the
NZBC's Beach Radio from Paihia.
As the new university year began in March, Radio Ribbet burst forth
from
beneath the lily ponds at Otago University, Radio U from a concrete
block at
Ilam, Radio Active from somewhere on Kelburn Parade and, 1XB from a
dark corner
of Auckland University.....and students were allowed freedom of the
airwaves...for just a week or two.
A whole range of short term licences were issued for all sorts of
purposes,
ranging from a few hours to a few weeks. Radio Rhema got its start
with a few
hours one day in Christchurch....Maori radio from a 'Maori Language
Week'
broadcast in Wellington...and university radio was born this way.
We've put some memory ticklers at www.radioheritage.net, along with
some nice
images, logos and artwork from some of these stations that later
blossomed into
fulltime broadcasters.
Household name DJ's got their start behind a microphone in a caravan
on sports
day, or from a rundown campus studio, or from judging beauty contests
and
talent quests at the beach.
If you, your family or your friends were involved with any of these
many short
term New Zealand radio stations, we'd love to hear from you. As part
of our
2007 campaign 'Celebrating over 85 Years of Popular Kiwi Radio' we're
collecting as many photos, items of memorabilia, tape recordings and
stories
about these stations as we can find.
They may be just 'short term memories', but the Radio Heritage
Foundation gives
them a permanent home at www.radioheritage.net.
Write to us at Radio Heritage Foundation, PO Box 14339, Wellington
6241, New
Zealand or send us an email to info@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Helping
preserve and
celebrate a fun part of New Zealand's cultural heritage.
