Have you tried a modern inverter? I use one with my HF-1000 (which 
has no DC in) without any problems.  And I have also topped up the 
charge on a laptop and there was no noticeable noise increase.

There are also 12v power supplies for most laptops but I suspect they 
have inverter built in to get the 19v or so often required. 
Kensington and Igo are two suppliers.
