ought to have caused the above reaction. 

HDTV was indeed born out of the need to sell more TV sets. That
statement doesn't make any value judgement on the level of perceived
improvement.

But I will say that I have seen a fair amount of sports on HDTV, and
I've seen side-by-side comparisons, and what is absolutely clear to me
is that there is a great deal of variance owing to an equal number of
variables in terms of the quality of transmission, quality of signal,
quality of receiver, proper hookup, etc.

I see an improvement, but so far I have not seen sufficient improvement
for me to go and trash my analog set and buy an ( overpriced ) HDTV in
a size I can't reasonably accomodate. To me there's a lot of YMMV here.
