I have an electric edger out in the garage and I'll try to take a look 
later and see if the guide that fits against the concrete of the 
sidewalk can be removed to allow the thing to just cut a deep slit. It 
might work for burying a wire. The slit that the rotating blade makes 
isn't too wide, so it might be just the ticket for slipping a wire into. 
The cutting depth is controlled by a rolling depth wheel, so you might 
have to remove that and add a skid or something. It might take some 
slight modification to get the thing perfected.

If an edger would work, you could cut sod pretty fast.
