[IRCA] KKOL

Where is the main lobe going:

Days: Radiation maximum (3778 mV/m @ 1 km) is at 357 degrees but the pattern
is ever so slightly asymmetrical, so the midpoint of the main lobe is at 20
degrees.

Nights: Radiation maximum (4611 mV/m @ 1 km) is at 314 degrees.

The day pattern is considerably fatter than the night pattern, so the
equivalent power at the night maximum is about 50% higher than the
equivalent power at the day maximum and about 60% higher than the equivalent
power at the midpoint of the main daytime lobe.

As for the mediocre reception in Everett and Bellingham, on which someone
commented, as KJR's move to and then away from the KHHO site shows, Tacoma
is not such a great location for an AM licensed to Seattle. Unless the site
is such that the signal travels entirely over salt water to the reception
point, the poor soil conductivity surrounding Puget Sound defeats many of
the advantages of the salt-water path. The KHHO site apparently didn't work
out all that well for KJR and the station was very fortunate in being able
to diplex with KGNW. 950's 50 kW-U signal and excellent DA patterns coupled
with KGNW's advantageous location must give KJR about the best signal in the
immediate Seattle metro among all of the Seattle area's eight 50-kW AMs
(five of which are 50 kW or almost 50 kW at night). KKOL's app shows that,
notwithstanding the 47-kW night power, it doesn't deliver an NIF signal to
all of Seattle. The combination of the distance, the mainly over-land path,
the soil conductivity, the pattern, the frequency, and the competing signals
are just too much. In all likelihood, KKOL has the worst signal in Seattle
among those eight 50-kW AMs.

However, considering all of the sites KKOL investigated but was unable to
use, Salem did about as well as it could.
