Hi Rene,

I totally agree with the noise level these days. In talking with DXers
that have moved in recent years from cities to small towns, they have
been amazed on how low the noise level is at their new location. I guess
living around all of the noise for years, a person seems to get used to
it. But when they finally hear the differerce, they are surprised. With
computer noise, light dimmers, touch lamps, powerlines, and all sorts of
other things, it is a miricle anyone can DX at all from cities. Of
course what is also lost are the lower powered stations in a market. The
little 1 KWer hardly has a chance of competing today. Like in Portland,
I remember driving around listening to KVAN 1480 (1 KW daytimer), the
signal could even be heard fairly well driving through downtown. Now in
many areas it is buried in noise. The computer has really killed a lot
of reception. I wish the FCC would have made rules regarding noise.
Light dimmers can be made pretty much noise free with filtering,
computers can. Laptops are pretty clean in many cases. Touch lamps may
be another issue. Powerlines can be kept clean of noise. So thing can be
done to clean up much of the noise, but nothing is done in many areas.
