I put them in using a section of pipe and an old truck axle inside. Sort of
a reverse slide hammer. To remove them I usually just put a pipe wrench on
them and twist them up and out. That even works with ones than have been in
there for years.
Instead of ground rods, how about laying out some wire in an X shape?
Connect the ground to the center of the X. It becomes a short radial
system. I'd think a couple of hundred foot sections of bare wire would be
as good or better than a single ground rod, especially in sandy or dry
ground.
