Historically speaking, which I understand is just that, if a station
agreed to test, they agreed to QSL. Over the past few years, this has
changed. During that time, we are probably batting under .500 with WTIC
being the arguable start of this trend.
I am not among that group within the hobby to whom a logging doesn't
count without a QSL - in fact I can't relate to that at all. I recorded
WISN, WOKY, and half a dozen other tests which didn't verify over the
past 3 years - not a complaint, just a statement of fact. I sent mostly
email reports with recordings. I followed up also by email once each.
I have 5 QSL's from probably a dozen tests reported over the 2003-04
and 2004-05 seasons - one from WIMA and the remainder from tests
arranged by and QSL'ed by Ron Gitschier.
But I think the characterization of Greg's initial email was overly
harsh, as was the characterization that most of those who are seeking
QSL's are retired and have nothing to do. Using Patrick as an example
of someone who is an avid QSL'er, I know that he's most definitely not
retired, nor are several others.
But it's quite obvious to me that we need to be prepared to not only
offer QSL-manager service, but to step in and provide it when either
the person at the station leaves ( as happened in 2 cases I reported )
the station, or simply fails to follow through for whatever reason.
I understand the difference between having a card or letter from the
station as opposed to a 'substitute', but if that's the only way to get
the verification, then beggars can't be choosers. If you want to have
tests in this day and age, you're going to have to compromise somewhere
- whether it's to save your recording as proof or to accept a QSL
Manager's verie.
