I am not sure about something as late as 1969 but
my recollection of the big 'pest' on 1460, the first
one to s/on onto an empty channel (Monday AM) was
WRAD in Radford Va and I also do remember some
stations that did this trick of running the VID before
the SSB anthem. If your 3 AM was in PST, this
would of course be 6 AM EST, so in truth could
have been someone else as well. But I would not
bve surprised to learn you may have had WRAD.

It was the opposite for us in NJ as 3 AM EST Monday was
the time to hear Calif. signing off and I verified a number
of them. One of my best logs was KROP 1300 but
they never verified for me. All in English back then, too.
I think they were just 500 watts. That was how I first got
Oregon, KMED 1440 who replied with a full page typed
letter mentioning other reports they had from the East.
They had a stunningly beautiful letterhead with a
picture of their studio building. One morning I had an ET
from KBIG 740 Avalon CA (Catalina) who had a very nice
QSL card with a map of the island and a mimeo'ed info
sheet.

These were the days of AN-6 operation and this type
of reception was limited to Monday and occasionally
there would be a Sunday silent, notably WHO 1040
who had too much farm market news on Monday,
and in Omaha they did the same. Even then there were
a number of AN-7 stations, usually the first ones who
adopted the idea of having alternate-main Xmtrs
so they could do maintenance without signing off.

I remember in, I think, 1959 when local WPAT 930 ran
big advertisements saying they were going to AN-7
operation, and I heard and veried WKY and CJCA
on the last day that freq was open. The real DX target
on 930 however was VRH in Suva, Fiji which I never
came close to hearing. I am not sure they were
even possible in that era any more.

Hoping that this reminiscing is of interest. I do recall
"PSL" Paul Lotsof from years ago.
