Re: [IRCA] Rain, but no South Pacific

Dennis,

The Pacific does not have the "signal punch" they used to have back in
the 80s. Night after night, the dial was filled with the Pacific,
Australia, New Zealand, etc. I remember in Nov 1980 when I took over
DXWW-West, sitting there typing the column on 8.5 by 14 paper and
listening to Robbie Broadfield doing his weekly countdown on 1026 4MK
Mackay, Q. They were coming in S9+20 DB night after night. I wrote to
him for a time commenting on the countdown. The station was there like,
you would listen to something like KCBS or KFI up here. But one day,
they were all gone. The great DU cx were in full swing in 1979 when I
moved back from Portland until about the mid 80s. I still hear some DUs,
but not near as many. 4MK, now I think 4SL or something like that is
heard a couple times a year probably. I thought those DX conditions in
the 80s would last forever. I got so used to them. Night after night
after night. They were common, 2GB-873, 4BH-882, 2UE-954, 4MK-1026, and
the list goes on. I was in DU Heaven. Hopefully those cx will return
again. I spent a fortune of reports, but the QSLs came in droves. I
remember going to the post office one day in the Summer of 1979 and
finding 7 QSLs. 4 were from Australia and 3 from New Zealand. All in one
day.
