Re: [IRCA] Alaska from the midwest?

One problem with trying to hear Alaskan beacons, is usually the noise level
is higher the lower you go in frequency.
I can't directly find a beacon associated with Nome, but a DXer in Colorado
has recently heard 2 Alaskan beacons for the first time. 233 ALJ, Johnstone
Point is fairly widely heard--that was the first one he heard, and he's
heard it at least several times since. Its modulation is +/- 400 Hz, thus if
you listen for it in CW mode, with a narrow IF filter, tune the radio to
233.4 or 222.6 and listen for the morse code ident. Of course there are
Canadian beacons with 400 Hz modulation on 233, but usually the lower
sideband is much clearer to try for; at least that's where I always hear
ALJ, almost never on its usb. It runs fairly high power for a beacon, in the
100-500 watt range. I would say hearing ALJ would be the easiest Alaskan
beacon to hear for anyone not on the West Coast. The beacons Nick mentioned,
SQM and ICW are only low-power interior beacons, running a nominal 25 watts,
and are not widely heard even on the West Coast (unless you live in B.C. or
northern WA!). And there's always 530 ADK, Adak to try for. It has wide
coverage on the West Coast as long as you don't have something strong on
530.
Good luck and good listening.
Steve
