I have a modified R1000. Not a bad radio. The R 500 is supposed to be
better than the R1000, but neither are in the same dept as the R8/A/B. I
would hold out for an R8 Charlie. You wont regret it. I have had my R8
since 1992 when I bought it new for $959. It is the best receiver I have
ever heard hands down.
