I've heard this idea about "CAM-D" on the AM Stereo lists...and it's also a
bunch of bunk. The only way AM and FM radio can compete with digital is to scrap
digital radio on AM and FM altogether, restore ownership limits based on actual
physical properties rather than audience reach, require at least 60% local
programming on all stations (especially in our nation's top 75 markets),
and force all receiver manufacturers to use Freescale's "Symphony" chip
(which converts all analog signals to digital) in their receivers. The
"Symphony" chip includes C-QUAM AM Stereo, which is more proven than any digital
system out there. While IBOC cuts down on AM station coverage areas (and Leonard
Kahn's proposed "CAM-D" will also decrease AM station coverage areas), C-QUAM
doesn't.
The FCC should have forced open the broadcast job market to new applicants,
resisted NAB pressure and did exhaustive research on digital radio before
proceeding. It's no wonder commercial radio is dying in the United States. If
this continues, then the only logical solution would be to eliminate the
commercial radio broadcasting service altogether.
