There is a very detailed article about the station at the Radio
Heritage website http://www.radioheritage.net/Story15.asp
The article, written by NZer David Ricquish, includes a scan of my
QSL letter and some photos Pete Taylor received from the station.

I made some music tapes for the manager, Joyce Haas and sent her some
film to take pictures. She did and sent the roll back for me to
develop. You can't tell from the web site but she was actually a
pretty lady, probably about 30. I belief she was related to the Haas
family in Oakland. We corresponded for a while but I was never able to
find out where she ended up (Honolulu?), and again, assuming she had
Oakland roots, was obviously never able to set up a function with Bay
Area DXers so she could share some of her experiences as a radio
operator. I sent the pictures to Bruce and he sent them down to David
Ricquish. When we moved up here in 96 from SF, I made a valiant effort
to go through all my pictures and negatives but never was able to find
the Canton Island ones. As for the music tape I sent her, this was in
the 70s so I recall the BeeGees were on there but don't recall what
else.

Does anyone know for sure what actually was going on on the island?

Pete,

Downrange missile test observation center.

I always wondered why 1385 kHz. Not that it mattered a bunch out there on Canton Island what frequency they chose. But the 5 kHz offset?
