Someone on another radio list recently
bought an LCD display; when he got it home it wiped out reception from LF-HF--he
returned it. He took along a portable radio and checked every display in the
store (a Best Buys store, as I recall). I believe he only found one model
that was quiet, and bought that one, and has had no noise problems with his
radios. Apparently the switching power supply used in these displays is the
problem. Most of the CRT displays were quiet but only one or two of the LCD
displays were. Let the radio hobbyist buyer be forewarned.
For laptops, I can only comment on the
couple older ones I have, plus a recently-purchased late model one--all mine are
quiet for the laptops themselves, though the small switching power supplies will
give off noise if you hold a radio near them, and a portable radio used in the
same room with them will have a lot of high-level junk being received from
LF-MF. But my outside antennas and tabletop radios are unaffected.
