Re: [IRCA] Portable MW/SW Radio

Bert,

Regarding the 2010,I agree with John, with a
qualification: if you back the antenna plug out just a
bit you'll bypass the external antenna attenuation. I
have used this technique successfully during several
DXpeditions. Also, a couple of diodes fit nicely
within the plastic Sony external antenna connector
box. A proximate antenna coupler, such as the one
Gerry Thomas makes for the Quantum Loop would also
alleviate this problem. I have both the DX-398 and
2010. I like the DX-398, but it has a voracious
apopetite for batteries, whereas the 2010 will last
quite some time on batteries. The synchronous
detection in the 2010 can also be very useful for
reducing the effects of adjacent channel interference.
If you're interested in learning more about the 2010,
do a web search for articles on the 2010. The 2010 has
also been noted to be fairly robust. The DX-398 can be
modified for improved sensitivity by removing a
resistor or two. They are tiny surface mount
components though, and a bit of a pain to access. The
Sony ICF-SW7600G is fairly good also, if size is a
consideration. I have not tried the S-350 yet, so I
cannot comment on it. Best of luck in your quest.
