Re: [IRCA] Portable MW/SW Radio

Bert, If you buy a Sony 2010 from a "non-DXer" chances are it's OK. The main problem with a used 2010 is it could be very deaf do to use of external antennas that easily damage the touchy input circuits on 2010's. Anyone who has worked in a Vendors repair shop will have experienced many such repairs. Bottom line, only buy a used 2010 from someone you know.
For portable MW DX the Sangean 909, or even it's Radio Shack counter part (RX-394 as I recall) would be a good bet. The 909 has carrier insertion for SSB & not a BFO clarifier as do most portables like the YB 400 or Sony 7600 series. For travel I use the 909 with a Kiwa Pocket Loop plus the regeneration unit. You can couple the Pocket Loop/Regen. add on to the MW ferrite rod in the 909 for all the sensitivity you need. Plus the 909 has a manual gain control to further aid it's RF handling ability.
The filters in the 909 are also superior. Kiwa uses those filters for modifying the Icom R-75 as they are 450 kHz IF, same as the ones used on the last IF on the R-75. The Kiwa Pocket Loop is a Hi-Z antenna and can be used on many other receivers for SW BCB listening. But, the Sony 7600 series & the YB 400 do well on the road & have a smaller foot print.
