281 FM channels operational in India

The Information & Broadcasting Ministry has received
over Rs 1.67 crore as license fee from private FM
radio broadcasters during September 2007. The total
number of FM radio channels has increased to 120 by
the same period. 

Five radio channels were commissioned during September
2007, which includes MY FM (Synergy Media) for Ajmer,
Radio Dhamal (BAG Infotainment) for Muzaffarpur and
Dhule, BIG FM (Adlabs Films) for Ajmer and Radio
Mirchi (ENIL) for Kolhapur.

Presently, a total of 281 FM channels include 161 of
All India Radio and 120 privately owned channels are
operational. It may be noted that an additional 150
private FM radio stations and 11 All India Radio FM
stations are expected to go on air by the end of this
financial year.

The 150 private FM radio stations would be launched in
the states of Maharashtra (25), Kerala (17), Tamil
Nadu (14), Rajasthan (10), Gujarat (10), Andhra
Pradesh (9), Madhya Pradesh (9), Uttar Pradesh (9),
Karnataka (8), West Bengal (8), Jharkhand (7), Punjab
(7), Chattisgarh (6), Himachal Pradesh (3), Puducherry
(3), Sikkim (3), Assam (2), Meghalaya (2), Orissa (2),
Arunachal Pradesh (1), Bihar (1), Daman and Diu (1),
Mizoram (1) and Tripura (1).
