[Swprograms] OT, sorta: NY Times to stop charging for parts of their website

Story here:

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/18/business/media/18times.html?_r=1&hp&oref=slogin

Key quote:

"What changed, The Times said, was that many more readers started
coming to the site from search engines and links on other sites
instead of coming directly to NYTimes.com. These indirect readers,
unable to get access to articles behind the pay wall and less likely
to pay subscription fees than the more loyal direct users, were seen
as opportunities for more page views and increased advertising
revenue.

""What wasn't anticipated was the explosion in how much of our traffic
would be generated by Google, by Yahoo and some others," Ms. Schiller
said."

This is of interest to an international broadcasting discussion
because it demonstrates that people will find a broadcaster's content
via a variety of methods -- not solely by switching on a radio. I've
contended that Radio Netherlands and the VOA are two broadcasters that
benefited by cooperating early on with the "Google News" initiative --
with a frequency belying their stature, stories from these two
broadcasters would show up on the first page of "Google News."
