BBC Radio was *seriously* affected by industrial
action on 22 December 1978, when all national and local stations, except London,
were replaced by a special service, nicknamed Radio 10, from 16:00 UTC. On
the external side, numerous overseas language services were disrupted, and the
MW transmitters on 648 and 1296 kHz remained with the main BBC WS English stream
all evening, apart from the period 21:00-22:00, when the regular exchange
between BBC Orfordness 1296 and VOA Munich 1197 continued as usual, though I
cannot recall whether the scheduled Italian was heard on 1197, or whether it was
in fact English. Although 648 stayed with English all evening, the French
and German programmes, plus English by Radio, which were normally aired on that
transmitter, continued on their normal SW frequencies, so why they did not air
on MW remains a mystery to this day.
