This week's Radio Netherlands documentary by my
colleague Hélène
Michaud takes a look at the current role of Radio Free
Europe/Radio Liberty:
During the Cold War, Radio Free Europe and Radio
Liberty played a
crucial role in the struggle against communism. But
with the collapse
of the Iron Curtain, they needed a new purpose. After
the 11 September
2001 attacks in New York and Washington, they were
mobilised to
support the United States? war on terrorism, in an
unprecedented
effort to win the hearts and minds of Muslims.
Now, more than half the 28 language services managed
by Radio Free
Europe and Radio Liberty broadcast to parts of the
world that are
predominantly Muslim. Hélène examines this change in
focus, and asks
whether the ambition to provide impartial information
can be
reconciled with the demands of US foreign policy.
