I have long felt that there should be a major relay site in the
high plains of Canada, near the U.S. border. Both eastern and
western U.S. cities, plus all of the Gulf Coast and Caribbean
would fall into the single hop reception zone on a number of
frequencies, particularly during low sunspot times. The soils
of the region would also provide decent ground conductivity.
It wouldn't consistently help me, unfortunately, as I would be
too close most of the time (although I do regularly get good
reception from Canadian hams in that region, particularly on 40
meters). But it would sure help others in the more populated
parts of the U.S.
