Re: [Swprograms] CPB meddling

OK I have followed this discussion and have some comments. As to whether
CPB is a "lefty" organisation, may I offer up the following?

>From 1979 to 1982 I held down a volunteer job at a local community radio
station here in Atlanta. When I was chairman of our stn. Operations
Committee, we had quite a bitter discussion about whether to affiliate
with CPB. This would have made us eligible (at that time) for much
needed funding as we wanted to up our power to 50,000 watts. But there
were some caveats-as we would have been forced to take certain CPB
programs and allocate a certain number of hours in our broadcast day to
such items. We felt the potential for meddling in our affairs by CPB was
too great and voted not to pursue this. I felt that we could not afford
to take the risk to our independent integrity and I think we only had
one or two people out of about 10 IIRC that voted for a CPB affiliation.

My impression at the time was the exact opposite----that they were more
"righty" than anything. Same thing we had with taking certain Pacifica
programs----no way jose.

Maybe the money CPB gets from the government is much less than it was 25
years ago. My philosophy is that *any* money from the government comes
with strings attached, no matter what image CPB has, then or now.
