[Swprograms] OT: Status of American newspaper industry on "Marketplace" yesterday (14th April)

There was an interesting analysis of the US newspaper industry on
yesterday's "Marketplace". Listen online at
http://marketplace.publicradio.org/pm.html; click "recent shows" if
you load the URL after the Friday show is posted.

As more people get their news from other sources, newspapers are
seeing their circulation and ad revenue dwindling. At the same time,
few general-interest newspapers have carved out online
subscription-based business models that are viable.

It's only the papers that serve niche audiences or provide value-added
content that are able to make any $$.

One takeaway for international broadcasting is that I belive the
potential for online subscription models for the BBC etc. would be a
non-starter even if their charter were altered to allow it. There's
the potential for fees for high-bandwidth downloading (e.g. TV) but
probably not for basic listening.
