This is a "can't see the forest for the trees" kind of argument you both are raising.  If you put the Friedman statement as described by Buch into context, you'll know that Friedman said that the whole adventure (Iraq war) would turn on the aftermath of the invasion.  (I mean, did anyone question what the immediate outcome of the invasion would be?)  If mishandled (which he feared it would be from the start), it would turn into Kosovo.  But the upside was a scenario approaching that of a federal, reunited Germany.  It was the potential offered by this upside that drove him to support the Bush war even though he never bought the rationale for it that Bush stated.  

The rest or what Buch stated about Friedman is all true: fluent in Arabic (which very few Americans are), lived in the region for a time and has visited it often.  

I get a little burr under my saddle when folks key on unimportant ephemera to attack someone or something that is fundamentally sound...
