2005
THE NATIONAL INTEREST - the major issues of the week presented by
Terry Lane, one of Australia's most accomplished interviewers. This
week: "Family farms and US trade agreements - the Canadian experience"
- Since Canada signed its first trade agreement with the United States
in the late 1980s, Canadian farm production and export volumes have
grown dramatically. But Canada's National Farmers' Union says family
farmers themselves are much worse off. "The Family farm and US trade
agreements - the Australian situation" - In Australia too the family
farm is under pressure. In order to stay on the land many farmers have
been forced to find off-farm work to supplement their income; others
are selling up as farms consolidate into industrial scale enterprises.
Will things get better or worse under a trade deal with the USA?
"Selling Berri" - In 1996 businessman Doug Shears took out full page
newspaper advertisements warning against foreign ownership of
Australian food companies. This week, Doug Shears agreed to sell down
his majority stake in the Berri fruit juice company to allow
Philippines-based brewer San Miguel to buy 50% of the company. [%]
