[Swprograms] OT about petition dealing with Low Power FM in the US

Hello,

I am on a radio drama list. This post came in today. It is about a petition dealing with getting the "full implementation of Low Power FM community stations".

I know this is off topic, but LPFM has been a subject of this group in the past.

Howdy Coyotistas!

I don't normally ask you to consider joining a petition. There are enough
petitions in this world already and, generally speaking, those who receive
them tend to discount them as authored by cranks, however plentiful they may
be.

But here is a petition which not only speaks to a subject near and dear to
us, but is the fulfillment of a political promise by our Senator John
McCain. And I feel whenever a senator delivers on a promise, especially in
the face of moneyed resistance by a powerful lobby (National Association of
Broadcasters), its a good thing to recognize and support them.

When Congress caved to the combined pressure of the NAB and National Public
Radio (how's that for an unlikely cabal?) and limited the amount of
frequencies available for low power fm community radio stations, McCain
promised to fight for reinstatement of the original Federal Communications
Commission plan.

When the Mitre Report was published, showing there was no earthly reason to
suspect LPFM stations would cause interference for existing FM stations,
McCain vowed to fight for reinstatement of the original Federal
Communications Commission plan.

And, kids, crazy as it sounds in modern day politics, the senator did just
that.

The senator from Arizona has introduced a bill which calls for the full
implementation of low power fm community stations, down to and including
channels as close as 3rd adjacency.

What does that mean to you?

Well, if you live in Flagstaff, it means you might have a shot at listening
to a true community radio station. One of the most vibrant LPFM groups in
the state found themselves without an open frequency after the NAB Spin
Doctors worked their mojo on Congress.

McCain's bill would return to them an open frequency.

Even if Coyote Radio and Prescott Community Access Channel have their
construction permit for a community radio station in Prescott, lots of other
groups aren't that lucky.

If you would, please click on:

And sign the petition, to be sent to the congressman or senator of your
choice.

Remember, they work for you. Tell them what to do. And, when they do, as
our friend Lee Shoblom, of PCAC, did last Nov. 1, thank them for standing
in the right. When Lee saw McCain on the steps of the courthouse here in
Prescott, he made a point of thanking him for his support of LPFM.

May the same be said for your senator/congressman. (And I'm talking to you,
Senator Kyl.)

Thanks again for your support and, as always, please feel free to pass this
on to any friends you think might be interested.

Until next time, I remain
your radio pal,
