One of the most well known proponents of Otago country music, Dusty Spittle was born near Gore in 1939. Born deaf in his right ear, he nevertheless fostered a love of country music and joined local act The Mountaineers, recording in a member's tractor shed. In the 1960s he initiated a talent quest for country musicians that became Gore's Golden Guitar awards. Spittle wrote about historical figures such as Davy Gunn and Arawata Bill, but his best known song is a tribute to a great horse, Cardigan Bay.
