- Thread-topic: From Chris Kadlec-- Korean Stations No Longer on Air
For those interested, Chris Kadlec has posted a detailed list of the South Korean MW stations which are no longer transmitting. He is currently living near Seoul, and has posted this data on a Facebook group.
From Chris:
Â
For those who keep track of AM station data, here are 35 Korean stations on Asiawaves ( asiawaves.net , Alan Davies' very helpful database) that are no longer on the air. There are no doubt others, but these are just the result of my sifting through the lists. Dozens of other stations have incorrect tower locations, though there are only a handful of Korean tower errors among them, most of them not too notable.
Many of these stations have been off for many years, perhaps long b efore I ever moved here in 2009. For example, 1440 AFN Chuncheon broadcasts from Camp Page, which doesn't even exist anymore. 639 is apparently beside my apartment (thank god it's not) but there has never been a tower there to my memory and satellite photos dating back 10 years ago also come up blank. 621 and 927 are jammer frequencies and are wiped clean.
Many stations overlapped major AM stations. For instance, 100kw 756 AM went off the air at the start of the year (looks like January 1st according to it disappearing from my logs in the middle of my band scan project); it repeats a 500kw station that blasts in day and night over 756's coverage area and easily covers the Seoul metro area and into Pyongyang. It was a waste of money to operate dinky stations that were already covered, not to mention the nearly 100% FM coverage. 1359 was AFN Osan, but 1440 broadcasts from the massive Camp Humphreys (a city in itself) 8 miles down the road; the two are a shared military community of 25,000 people, the AM based at Humphreys and FM based at Osan.
