Did you ever take a look at these, as I had mentioned?

And, with a design change I had mentioned, I think the 10 turn pot and vernier dial are not needed. Did you try that?

That must be a pretty old article (but very build-able!) as the VACTROL's I
can get are now around $12 (USD), Ten-turn posts (which the nimble fingered
could live
without ) around $16 (USD)
Totally into building more flexible products -- with a bit more direction
and experience.
