Boston Area DXers member Steve Byan was first out of the gate with a Vactrol scheme initially applied to Beverage termination in 1996.  His controller was successfully used on late '90s Newfoundland DXpeditions.  The original Vactrol he used had a sealed incandescent light element to control the photoresistor.  The version being used since about 2000 uses an LED light source instead.  That's about the time that Ewes, Flags, Kaz Deltas, Pennants, K9AY's, and other terminated loop designs gained popularity in the medium wave DX and 160/80m ham communities and this method of termination control quickly showed its value in solving a problem.
