Re: [IRCA] Announcement for WJR off for maint LAST NIGHT

Here on Cape Cod with one antenna that aims south and another aimed east, WJR is typically only a minor problem for DXing 760. Even when it shows up on both antennas it can easily be phase nulled with a Quantum Phaser or d-i-y equivalent. An ordinary indoor loop or a portable radio's built-in ferrite rod also has little difficulty nulling The Great Voice of the Great Lakes.

So, for the benefit of others who do eventually catch a night time WJR silent period, here are some targets based on what I note here more or less in order of how common:

COLOMBIA, HJAJ, RCN, Barranquilla (// 770 HJJX, 1000 HJAQ)
PUERTO RICO, WORA, Mayaguez (// 630 WUNO)
CUBA, R. Progreso, two sites (// 640, 690, 900, et al.)
BRAZIL, ZYH588, R. Uirapuru, Fortaleza
VENEZUELA, YVQQ, Puerto la Cruz
USA - FL, WEFL, Tequesta
HAITI, 4VU, Radio Lumiere, Les Cayes (Tentative)

We used to have Guyana fairly often but that one's gone.

Neil Kazaross in IL/WI and Glenn Hauser in OK can likely add their perspectives about more westerly 760 candidates - Mexicans etc.

Subject: Re: [IRCA] Announcement for WJR off for maint LAST NIGHT

I heard that brief announcement for maint shutdown a
minute or two before midnight EST during the TOH break for
John Batchelor show. The announcement did not mention when
or how long this off period would be. It took me a few
minutes to fire up the computer and log into e-mail
account. During that few minutes I was in another room
out of earshot of the radio.

So - by the time I returned that "brief" off period may
have already passed. I listened to WJR for two more hours
and there was no off period or any further mention of it!

You never know if it will be productive. However, about
ten years ago I heard a similar announcement while
listening to KMOX. I sent out the word as soon as I could
and that time KMOX did indeed go off for several hours!

If WJR had gone off the air for a long SP and I was up and
listening and heard something good and said nothing about
it I still would have taken the heat!
