Chasing Down-unders during auroral conditions, for me, has always been
about unimpressively
weak signals and little audio due to traditionally low modulation -
thankfully most DU's no
longer operate under the same standards they did in the 60's and 70's.
Additionally, since virtually all DU's operate with significantly less than
50kw of power -
more often 5 or 10KW, one does not get the blistering signal strengths more
readily observed
from most of the big Japanese and Korean stations.
Which is why some of this mornings signals, if only very, very briefly,
defied the laws of physics
by putting in very readable signals.
Here is my meagre but exciting report.
Listened from 1325 until 1410 UTC
576 Khz - 1329 UTC Seemingly endless Classical music with no talk - and
faded before talk appeared -
could not find any parallels on the ABC National internet feeds I had
going...
612 Khz - 1402 UTC 4QR Brisbane - signal winner of the morning with easy //
to internet feed
774 Khz - 1346 UTC 3LO Melbourne - 2nd best signal o' the morn with ABC
programming
792 Khz - 1356 UTC 4RN Brisbane - // Live stream and even better at 1408 -
3rd best signal of the session
828 Khz - 1344 UTC UNid - solid // to 774 Khz stream - and in the clear -
4GC perhaps? Never heard AUS on this frequency
Other audio snippets and solid tease carriers on 558, 567(talk), 594
(music), 603, 702 (music), 747, 846, 855, 864, 891, 909, 918, 1008 (talk),
1035 (music)
1098 (audio and talk) - upper band was a wasteland apart from a bit of
carrier and audio on 1566.
Receiver - Drake R8 / W/NW Flag with DIY Vactrol remote termination control
AOR 7030+ on Wellbrook ALA100 N/S
